The course is offered as a requirement for inclusion in the Trained OLE Designer Network. It will cover the theoretical foundations, principles, and process for improving a childcare center outdoor learning environment (OLE) as an evidence-based, design intervention strategy that promotes healthful, nature-based outdoor spaces. It is delivered as a two-day seminar and includes two parts, the background and foundations of the concepts followed by their practical application in a design workshop. The seminar is facilitated by faculty of the Texas Tech Coalition for Natural Learning (CNL) and sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Earning Criteria
Required
Prerequisite: Experience as a landscape architect, landscape designer, environmental designer, architect, interior designer, student of the identified design disciplines (landscape architecture, architecture, interior design or environmental design), or as a designer of children’s playgrounds and/or similar facilities.
Completion of the entire two-day seminar
Understand and be able to implement the outdoor learning environment participatory design process and understand its importance to the overall success of the design intervention.
Apply the Natural Learning Initiative’s (NLI) Best Practice Indicators.
Follow the workshop process detailed in the outdoor learning environment Designer Guide.
Develop a final illustrative master plan of the proposed improvements that will be used by the center to promote their project and guide future implementation and construction documents.
Recognize the support the childcare centers need in order to begin the implementation of the outdoor learning environment.
Understand the Trained Outdoor Learning Environment Designer Network responsibilities and benefits.
Provide feedback to inform the OLE! Texas Initiative.
Recognize that TTU CNL trains designers in support of the OLE! Texas initiative to ensure that early childcare centers have trained designers to work with them.
Participants must complete multiple choice exam questions after each of the 10 modules. 80% passing rate is required.
